It's worse than 9/11

June 5, 2014

I watched the dedication of the 9/11 Memorial Museum and tried to imagine the awful pain and suffering caused by that senseless act of violence. But we have another 9/11 every 35 days. Each year more than 30,000 Americans die from gun violence, or about 10 times the number of victims of 9/11. Since that fateful day in 2001, the death toll has been duplicated more than 140 times by Americans with guns, and far too many of us are not outraged!

Most acts of gun violence generate fears that lead to more Americans buying guns, and more guns mean more gun violence, and more gun sales, and more gun violence, ad nauseam. When will that upward spiral of gun sales and gun violence abate? It appears the carnage will have to get much worse before the power of the gun lobby can be overcome, to bring about some sensible gun laws.

In time, it will happen, and without trampling on any "well regulated militia."

The Center for Disease Control predicts that in 2015 gun related deaths will exceed auto related deaths. One is going up while the other is going down. Wouldn't it be nice if both were going down?
