Mathias "Matty" Matoian presented Fresno State with a $500,000 gift Wednesday that will go to new and existing scholarships, a university spokesman said.

Most of the donation will go towards establishing the Matty Matoian Scholarship Endowment, which will give a total of $16,000 over four years to each of several promising business students at California State University, Fresno's Craig School of Business.

The remaining $50,000 will supplement the Charles Matoian Endowment Scholarship for nursing students. Matty Matoian established this scholarship in 1992 in memory of his father.

Four students will be named Matoian Scholars this fall. At least one additional student will be selected per year in succeeding years, the campus said. Tuition at Fresno State is about $6,200 per year for California undergraduate students.

"The scholarships from this generous gift will benefit countless students for years to come," said Dr. Robert Harper, dean of the Craig School.

Matoian is a Fresno State alumni and the chairman of the board at OK Produce, a wholesale distributor serving supermarkets throughout California. Matioan's father established the company in 1950, and he has managed the company since 1979.
