Fresno State added to its defensive line depth and its versatility up front on Wednesday, signing end Gabe Newman from Diablo Valley College.
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Newman has four years to play three seasons with the Bulldogs, and will join a position group that lost starters Nikko Motta and Andy Jennings as well as backup Ben Letcher.
In the spring, the Bulldogs had nose guard Tyeler Davison taking reps at end, giving Maurice Poyadue and Ioane Sagapolu opportunities to earn playing time inside while manufacturing some depth outside.
Newman will compete with Todd Hunt, Nate Madsen and Claudell Louis at end, with Davison able to move inside and out.
The Bulldogs also have two incoming freshman on the defensive line -- Sam Akoteu (6-2, 290) from Serra High-Gardena and Kyle Hendrickson (6-4, 250) from San Pasqual-Escondido.
Last season at Diablo Valley, Newman was in on 15 tackles including 2.5 sacks for a minus-15 yards.
