Fresno-area youth boxers head to Junior Olympic National Championships

Former Junior Open champions Richard Torrez of Tulare and Evan Sanchez of Parlier headline the six area amateur boxers scheduled to compete in the Junior Olympic National Championships on June 11-14 at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, W. Va.

Torrez, who won a Junior Open title earlier this year, competes in the heavyweight (176-pounds plus) division, while Sanchez, a 2013 Junior Open champ, is a featherweight (125 pounds).

Other locals entered in the 43rd annual event include Fresno flyweight (110 pounds) Marc Castro, Selma light bantamweight (114 pounds) Jacob Flores, Sanger bantamweight (119 pounds) Derek Ochoa and Visalia light middleweight (154 pounds) Juan Medrano.
