Fresno woman uses sister's name for Social Security benefits

The Fresno BeeJune 2, 2014

A Fresno woman pleaded guilty Monday to stealing $113,000 of Social Security benefits since 1996, reported U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner.

Ernedina Madrigal, also called Mary Louise, 78, applied for and began getting Social Security benefits by using her sister's name and a fake Social Security number, court documents showed. Madrigal was already receiving benefits in her own name. She received the benefits for more than 16 years, Wagner said.

Madrigal is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 25 and faces 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine or both.
