Groundwater regulation needed

FresnoJune 2, 2014

With all the whining about government regulation, The Bee stories on a proposed groundwater sale in Merced County (May 20/21) point exactly to why we do need regulation of our groundwater.

Subsidence already threatens the very capacity of our groundwater aquifers. In this groundwater sale proposal is a dangerously efficient means of exacerbating that problem.

Altruism and social responsibility will most surely be trumped when a farmer is offered $500 an acre-foot for the groundwater beneath his land.
