A 21-year-old man was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of stealing a brass fitting from the new Madera County Courthouse construction site, Madera police said.

Police added that with courthouse construction expected to be completed later this year, the man could face charges in the courthouse he is accused of looting.

A security guard spotted Guillermo Zuriaga inside the locked gates of the construction site about 2:30 a.m. Zuriaga ran from the guard, who eventually caught him. Zuriaga was found with brass fitting from the site, Madera police reported.

Thieves often steal metals like brass and copper from construction sites because the metals have a high recycle value, Madera police said.

Zuriaga was jailed on suspicion of possession of stolen property and trespassing, police said.
