Road construction planned for Sequoia, Kings Canyon parks

Visitors at Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks should expect numerous traffic delays within the parks over the next five months, spokesperson Dana Dierkes said.

Multiple road construction projects along Generals Highway -- also known as Highway 198, the main road through the parks -- will force 15- to 30-minute delays at various locations starting Monday through Oct. 24.

From Monday through June 13, flaggers and signs will direct traffic on the Generals Highway, with traffic scheduled to pass through at the top, bottom and quarter of each hour. The delays are scheduled for weekdays only, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. From 7-8 a.m. and 4-5 p.m., traffic will pass every 15 minutes. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., traffic will pass through every half hour.

Routes affected include to and from the General Sherman Tree, Crystal Cave and Grant Grove. The Big Stump Picnic Area also will be closed for construction weekdays June 2-19.

A map and complete schedule of traffic delays can be found at www.nps.gov/seki or call (559) 565-3341 for details.
