Grizzlies Report for 5/29: Reno 5, Fresno 2

The Fresno BeeMay 29, 2014

Roughing it in Reno: Reno moved within a victory of a four-game sweep as starter Bo Schultz scattered nine hits and two walks across six innings, the bullpen provided three hitless frames and five Aces drove in runs in a 5-2 victory over Fresno in a Pacific Coast League game Thursday night.

Gap grows: Fresno fell to 2-9 in the season series, with the Grizzlies limited to three runs or less in seven of those games and outscored 71-39 overall. The good news — the teams have just one four-game series left.

Double dose: The Aces turned a one-run game into a 4-1 lead with two in the fourth. With one out, Andy Marte, Danny Dorn and Nick Ahmed hit consecutive doubles off Grizzlies starter Jason Berken (7-3). Ahmed drove in one run, then Schultz got the second of the inning home with a sacrifice fly following an intentional walk. The RBI was Schultz's first of the season. He's still searching for his first hit, now 0 for 12 with eight strikeouts.

Starter's struggles: Berken continued through a rough patch that began even as he won six straight starts from April 21-May 19. He's allowed at least four earned runs in each of his past four games and his May ERA is 5.71.

Wednesday rewind: When the Grizzlies blew an 8-7 lead a day earlier against the Aces, it marked Fresno's first loss this season when leading after eight innings. The Grizzlies had been 23-0. Not surprisingly, the opposition also generally holds on late in games — with Fresno at 2-22 when trailing after eight.

Up next: Grizzlies LH Mike Kickham (2-5, 4.35 ERA) faces RH Zeke Spruill (2-1, 4.72) as the series concludes at 6:35 p.m. Friday. Kickham is coming off six hitless, shutout innings vs. Salt Lake on Sunday, forced to exit because of a high pitch count. Spruill got a spot start for Reno major league parent club Arizona on Sunday, allowing three runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out three in the Diamondbacks' 4-2 loss to the New York Mets. Fresno returns home for a four-game series with Pacific North Division- leading Sacramento beginning at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
