Funeral for Cal Fire firefighter to be held in Fowler

Graveside services for 31-year-old Fresno Cal Fire firefighter Roger Gonzales will be held starting at 10 a.m. Friday at the Fowler Cemetery, 8523 S. Fowler Ave.

A reception will immediately follow at Fowler City Park, located at Merced and Third streets.

South Fowler Avenue between Manning and South avenues will be closed from 9 a.m to noon. Beginning at 7 a.m., Second and Third streets between Merced and Tuolumne avenues, along with Merced Street between Second and Third streets, will be closed. Roads around the park will be closed from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Minor interruptions of traffic will take place as a procession moves from downtown Fowler to the cemetery.

In addition to the procession of the honor guard and pipes and drums, taps, folding and presentation of the flags, the services will include the symbolic tribute of the last alarm.

Gonzales died at his home on May 21 after returning from fighting the San Diego Complex wildland fires. He began his career with Cal Fire on Aug. 2, 2004 as a firefighter I, was promoted to firefighter II on Dec. 17, 2007 and was made permanent on Oct. 8, 2012.
