Fire heavily damaged a home in the 1300 block of West Barstow Avenue in northwest Fresno overnight, the Fresno Fire Department reported Thursday.

The blaze erupted just before midnight. Spokesman Keola Park said firefighters arriving at the home saw smoke and flames from the roof and called in more units.

The fire started in a living area and spread quickly to the attic, which ignited a wooden shake roof. Five engines, three ladder trucks and 34 firefighters responded to the scene. The cause of the fire and the amount of damage is under investigation.
