Grizzlies Report 5/28: Reno 9, Fresno 8 (10 innings)

The Fresno BeeMay 28, 2014

Early game, late loss: Reno's Nick Ahmed hit a two-out double in the bottom of the 10th to drive in Lucas Harrell, a pitcher who was serving as a pinch-runner, as the Aces rallied to beat Fresno 9-8 in a Pacific Coast League game Wednesday afternoon. The Grizzlies fell behind 5-0, rode a six-run fifth to what would become an 8-5 lead, then saw Reno rally for runs in each of the final three innings.

Another pitcher steps up: Fresno starter Edwin Escobar got off to a slow start on the mound, but helped trigger a comeback. His one-out double made it 5-1 in the fifth and the Grizzlies tacked on five more before the inning was over. Mark Minicozzi's double and Guillermo Quiroz's pinch-hit triple were among the run-scoring hits.

Reno re-rallies: The Aces closed in with a two-run eighth, then tied it with a gift run in the ninth. Mason Tobin issued a leadoff walk to Ahmed, who moved up on a passed ball charged to Quiroz. Aaron Cunningham advanced the runner to third with a flyball and Mike Jacobs singled him home. Another passed ball and a walk put runners at first and second before Tobin escaped on a pair of flyball outs.

Division downer: Fresno has lost 11 of 14 to opponents within their division — the Pacific North — and are 24-16 against everyone else. Reno has done much of the damage, winning eight of 10.

Back, briefly: Catcher Andrew Susac, placed on the extended roster May 25 with a hamstring issue, missed two games but was reactivated Tuesday and got the start Wednesday. He went 2 for 2 but was replaced by the pinch-hitting Quiroz in the fifth.

Up next: Grizzlies RH Jason Berken (7-2, 3.99 ERA) faces RH Bo Schultz (2-4, 5.84) as the series continues at 6:35 p.m. Thursday. Berken leads the staff in victories, but saw a six-start winning streak end Saturday at Salt Lake after giving up six runs in 42/3 innings — the third straight game he's allowed at least four earned. After Friday's finale, Fresno returns for a four-game homestand, all versus Pacific North leader Sacramento starting at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Chukchansi Park.
