Robber shot dead by Orosi resident identified

The man shot and killed by a resident whose home he was trying to rob has been identified as Victor Hernandez Deharo, 21, of Orosi, the Tulare County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday.

Another suspected robber, Rolando Magana, 18, of Cutler, was also shot during the botched heist but survived. He was booked from his hospital bed for murder in Deharo's death, and faces more charges, including gang activity.

Magana remains in critical but stable condition at a local hospital, the sheriff's department said. He can be charged with murder because someone died during the crime even if he didn't pull the trigger, authorities said.

The shooting took place about 5:42 a.m. Tuesday when four men broke into an Orosi home.

Four siblings -- ages 22, 18, 11 and 8 -- were inside the home, and the 22-year-old got a handgun from a safe and exchanged gunfire with at least one of the invaders, said the sheriff's department.

He was shot several times and is in stable condition in a different part of the same hospital, the sheriff's department said. His name has not been released.

Two other suspects dropped the wounded Magana their fellow robber, at Kaweah Delta Hospital, fled and have not been caught.

The sheriff's department released a video surveillance image of the two carrying Magana into the hospital. They drove to the hospital in a gray Chevy Astrovan, with a license plate number of 7CHR190.

The robbery is still under investigation and no motive has been made public.
