Grizzlies Report for 5/27: Reno 13, Fresno 0

The Fresno BeeMay 27, 2014

• Aces bat around early: Reno sent 10 batters to the plate in a four-run second inning that saw Grizzlies starting pitcher Jose De Paula leave the game with an undisclosed injury, and the Aces went on to a 13-0 victory Tuesday night at Aces Ballpark to open the four-game Pacific Coast League series. Mike Jacobs led off the second with a home run, Bobby Wilson and Nick Ahmed each had run-scoring singles and Fresno reliever Mitch Lively walked in a run for all the runs Reno would need.

• Arms race: The first five of six Grizzlies pitchers gave up runs -- De Paula, four runs in 1 2/3 innings; Lively, two in 2 1/3; Erik Cordier, two in one-plus; Jake Dunning, one in two; and Heath Hembree, four in two-thirds of an inning in the eighth. Mason Tobin retired the only batter he faced on a fielder's choice to second base to end Reno's offensive night. Meanwhile, Aces right-hander Lucas Harrell was on his game, allowing just three hits over seven innings with only one Fresno runner reaching as far as second base. Mark Serrano and Justin Van Grouw each added a scoreless inning to complete the shutout -- the Aces' second in a row after beating Albuquerque 1-0 Monday.

• Not done yet: In addition to his seven shutout innings, Harrell went 2 for 4 and drove in three runs with a two-run double in the third inning and an RBI single in the sixth.

• Ishikawa cools: Travis Ishikawa's team season-high 11-game hitting streak came to an end after the Grizzlies first baseman went 0 for 3 with a walk as his batting average dipped to .356.

• Up next: 1:05 p.m. Wednesday at Reno, with Grizzlies LH Edwin Escobar (2-5, 5.05) scheduled to face Aces RH Andrew Chafin (1-0, 3.86). Escobar will be making his 11th start of the season and is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA (four earned runs in 12 innings) and eight strikeouts in two starts against the Aces. Fresno is 6-8 in day games this season. The Grizzlies return to Chukchansi Park on Saturday to open a four-game series against the Sacramento River Cats.
