A 58-year-old Visalia bicyclist was hit and killed by a car near Ivanhoe, the California Department of Transportation reported.

The cyclist, whose name is being withheld until the Fresno County coroner can contact his family, was traveling west Friday night on Avenue 328, east of Road 156.

About 9:30 p.m., a 1999 Honda Accord traveling the same direction struck the rider at about 45 mph, throwing him from the bicycle, Caltrans said.

The driver, Jose Rivas, 48, of Visalia, did not see the bicyclist and immediately stopped and called 911, Caltrans said.

The cyclist was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, where he died of his injuries, Caltrans said.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident, which is under investigation.
