A man in his late 60s suffered second- to third-degree burns on 40%-45% of his body while trying to put out a fire near Springville, the Tulare County Fire Department said Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to the 42400 block of Balch Park Road to an outbuilding on fire just before 3 p.m. Monday.

The fire spread and burned a quarter-acre of grass before it was contained, Battalion Chief Mike Green said.

The outbuilding, about 12 feet by 12 feet, was destroyed. Inside were 10 vintage motorcycles, according to the fire department.

The victim was transferred to a local hospital via helicopter, Green said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
