Firefighters contain large riverbed fire near Fresno

The Fresno BeeMay 25, 2014

The Fresno Fire Department stopped a brush fire before it spread to a nearby dog shelter Saturday evening just northwest of Fresno.

Battalion Chief Don Bier said that no one was injured in the fire, but it could have been a lot worse. "We're lucky the first crews kept it from getting out of the river bottom," he said. "It really could have taken off."

The fire ripped through an acre of empty riverbed just about 500 feet from Fresno Bully Rescue on Herndon and Monroe avenues.
