Dumpster fire scorches Visalia building

The Visalia Fire Department is investigating an early-morning dumpster fire that caused $2,000 in damage Sunday to a building in downtown that houses several businesses, including the South Valley bureau of The Fresno Bee.

The first firefighters to arrive at 525 W. Main St. around 12:40 a.m. saw heavy smoke coming out of a dumpster near the building, the department said. Firefighters were able to contain the fire quickly and check the building in case flames spread.

There was some heat damage to a tarp at the entrance to the building and some scorch marks to the outside, the department said. The property is worth about $1 million.

Thirteen firefighters and other personnel responded to the fire. The cause is under investigation.
