Reconsider sick leave decision

Props to Supervisor Henry R. Perea for bringing the issue of sick leave donations back before the Fresno County Board of Supervisors. In addition to allowance for catastrophic illnesses and better usage monitoring by management, closer analysis may show that the program actually saves the county money in the long run.

For example, if a supervisor donated his or her hours to an assistant, those hours would be paid based upon the lower hourly rate of the assistant, and not at the supervisor's higher rate. Multiply this effect throughout the county and overall savings may be found, as sick leave hours are generally donated by managers, supervisors and those making more per hour than recipients. Additional savings may be found by limiting the benefits that come with donated hours, i.e., for health insurance only.

When reconsidering its decision, the board must apply the highest level of due diligence, given the devastating and demoralizing effect of its decision as reported by The Bee.
