There are going to be a lot of excited shoppers in Fresno this week. That's because two highly anticipated stores — H&M in River Park and a Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft in Clovis — are scheduled to open Thursday.

There are some juicy shopping opportunities on the local front too, but first, the big boys.

While it seems like everyone younger than 30 is buzzing about H&M, I'm betting there's some people who are pretty excited about Jo-Ann's opening. It opens at 9 a.m. in the Clovis Crossing Regional Shopping Center at Clovis and Herndon avenues.

Fresno already has a Jo-Ann's in River Park, of course. But I've heard plenty of horror stories about long waits at the cutting counter on Saturdays and before holidays. Hopefully a second store will ease the congestion. At a minimum, Clovis crafters won't have to drive to Fresno to get their fabric. There will be plenty of goodies available for people who show up for the grand opening, which stretches from Thursday through Saturday. They include a chance to win a $500 gift card, discounts, free reusable tote bags for customers who spend $20 or more and craft demonstrations. The first 100 customers each day will get a free gift card ranging from $10 to $250. Kids can make their own crafts to take home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

H&M will open at noon Thursday in the former Borders space. This promises to be a big event and River Park is ready with extra security and stanchions to guide the line. Shoppers can start lining up at 6 a.m. The trendy global clothing company has a huge following, particularly among the younger set. (The amount of buzz the Fresno store is getting on any and all social media sites is impressive.) It carries men's, women's, children's and women's plus-size clothing, maternity wear and accessories.

The first 100 shoppers in line will get an "Access to Fashion Pass" — a gift card for $10 to $300. Shoppers who bring in a bag of donated clothing that day will get 15% off their purchase for each bag.

And if you're a crafter who really can't stand crowds, I have good news for you. Michaels is finally offering online shopping. The site, at, sells all of the stores' crafting, sewing, floral and wedding-related products.

The site also features craft ideas with the ability to instantly add all the supplies you need to your shopping cart.

Glorious junk

Glorious Junk Days is today in Old Town Clovis. This event is sort of a catch-all for cool stuff: antiques, vintage wares, architectural salvage — old doors that can be made into headboards, etc. — repurposed items, collectibles, crafts. Many of the items look like projects you see on Pinterest, except someone else has already done the work. The event will also feature antique appraisals and demonstrations of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint for furniture.

Glorious Junk Days runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Pollasky Avenue and is free.

Lemoore has a new Goodwill store at 161 W. Hanford-Armona Road. The thrift shop is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

Dollar General

Madera recently got a Dollar General store, part of the chain's massive expansion into the Valley. This one is at 201 South Gateway Drive.

It carries food, housewares, seasonal items, cleaning supplies and basic clothing.
