The Fresno BeeMay 23, 2014

Fresno City College will dedicate a display case at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to a former student who died flying as a U.S. Air Force pilot.

The Mike Mendes Memorial Case of Distinction will permanently display the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup trophy that was awarded to the college's athletic department after its 2011-12 season.

Mendes played football and wrestled for Fresno City College in 1969. He went on to the R.O.T.C program at Fresno State, where he graduated as a lieutenant. Mendes was killed during a training flight in the early 1980s.
