Abandoned Calwa apartment building burns (video)

The Fresno BeeMay 18, 2014

Fresno-area firefighters on Sunday were battling yet another fire in an abandoned building frequented by transients.

Fresno County firefighters were called to 9th Street and Burns Avenue in Calwa, south of downtown Fresno, where a 6,000 square foot, single-story apartment complex was about 30% involved in flames, said Battalion Chief Mike Bowman of Fresno County Fire.

"The fire spread was rapid because of the wind," Bowman said.

Smoke blew through the neighborhood and billowed into the sky in a black plume seen for miles.

Old tires burned at the complex and occasional explosions of propane tanks could be heard.

About 42 firefighters were called to the scene. No injuries have been reported.
