Earlimart man dies when friend mishandles gun as they drank

A 20-year-old Earlimart man died from a gunshot wound on Friday after a friend mishandled a gun and fired off a shot, the Tulare County Sheriff's Department said.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. at the victim's house where he and the suspect were drinking, the sheriff's department said. The suspect had a handgun that went off and struck the victim once in the abdomen.

The victim, who has not been identified pending notification of family, was taken to the Delano Regional Medical Center by a private vehicle and then taken to the Kern Medical Center by ambulance where he later died.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Tulare County Jail. The case is under investigation.
