EDITORIAL: Thumbs up, thumbs down

-- Thumbs down to vandals who painted graffiti on the Fresno County Peace Officers Memorial at Courhouse Park. The graffiti quickly was cleaned up Thursday, but our community's outrage won't diminish until they are apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

-- Thumbs up to Fresno County Supervisor Debbie Poochigian for offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of vandals who tagged the memorial. Call (559) 600-3111 with tips.

-- Thumbs up to former Army Sgt. Kevin Piercy for graduating from Fresno State with a 3.77 grade-point average and Dean's Medalist honors. Piercy, who served in Iraq, is now headed to law school with the goal of becoming a civil rights lawyer. He is a graduate of Buchanan High School.

-- Thumbs up to 13 San Joaquin Valley high school students for winning $20,000 college scholarships and laptops from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. The students also will receive ongoing college advising and book stipends. The winners are: Maijou Vang from Edison High in Fresno; Pa Chang, Kee Voua Lee, Amber Cozad, Mariah Reason, Dee Yang and Chamee Yang from Sunnyside High in Fresno; Dayana Esquivel from El Diamante High in Visalia; Jacqueline Lemus from Strathmore High; Yesenia Marquez from Riverdale High; Iriana Pina from Lemoore Middle College High School; and Ayendili Alcantar and Margarita Ramos from Avenal High.
