Fresno State safety Derron Smith was one of 42 players named nationwide this week to the 2014 Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list.

Among other nominees is UCLA senior linebacker Eric Kendricks, a Hoover High graduate,

The award, in its 11th year, goes to the college football defensive player who has the biggest impact on his team on and off the field. IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

The winner will be announced at a Dec. 14 banquet at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach. Smith is a two-time first-team All-Mountain West selection and enters his senior season as the nation’s active leader in career interceptions with 14.

Smith was a quarterfinalist last year and in 2014 one of seven to make the list the past two seasons. Kendricks also made it to the quarterfinalist cut in 2013 while leading the Bruins in tackles (106) for the second straight season. He ranked third in the Pac-12.

UCLA linebacker Myles Jack also is a 2014 nominee. Anthony Barr became the first Bruin to win the award last season and last week was the ninth overall selection in the NFL draft, going to Minnesota.
