Fresno State football adds game at UCLA to 2018 schedule

Fresno State is going back to the Rose Bowl.

The Bulldogs will take on UCLA in Pasadena as part of their 2018 football schedule, with the game to be played on Sept. 15.

It will be Fresno State's sixth visit to the Rose Bowl and will almost 10 years since the Bulldogs' last visit -- a 36-31 victory over the Bruins led by quarterback Tom Brandstater, who had three touchdown passes, and running back Ryan Mathews, who had 166 yards on 21 carries, ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass in that game for the then-No. 25 ranked Bulldogs.

"Contracting this game with UCLA reflects our continued commitment to maintain a nonconference schedule that is balanced, while including competition with the nation's elite programs," Fresno State Athletic Director Thomas Boeh said in a news release announcing the game.

Fresno State has a 2-6 all-time record against the Bruins but has won the last two matchups. In 2003, the Bulldogs defeated UCLA 17-9 in the Silicon Valley Football Classic IV bowl game played in San Jose.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to face two other Pac-12 schools this fall -- opening with back-to-back road games at USC on Aug. 30 and at Utah on Sept. 6.
