Burrel Elementary School awarded $60,000 grant to hire PE teacher

The Fresno BeeMay 13, 2014

Burrel Union Elementary School District has been awarded a $60,000 grant from Kaiser Permanente to hire a physical education teacher and expand healthy exercise options for students and the community.

The Riverdale school is currently without a designated PE teacher and hopes the grant will allow for increased participation in exercise and healthy eating. The focus of the project is to decrease obesity and diabetes rates in the area.

As well as hiring a new teacher, the funding will be used to purchase exercise and sports equipment, create exercise classes for parents and expand the school's Family Nutrition Nights.

A second foundation, Lowe's Toolbox for Education, also awarded a smaller grant to support the program.
