Clovis West claims title; Central moves on, too

May 12, 2014

The Clovis West High boys golf team ran away with another Central Section title — and Central pulled off a rally to join the Golden Eagles at the Southern California Regional.

Clovis West won its second title in three years Monday, shooting a 381 to win the Division I title by 15 strokes in front of runner-up Clovis North as James Trevino shot a 2-under 70 and Jeff Yamaguchi carded a 74 to lead the way at Mifflin-Buena Vista Golf Course in Taft.

But while the Eagles were cruising, the real drama was in the D-II competition.

Defending champ Frontier shot 403 and that looked like it might be good for a repeat until Central's final two scores came in — and a 74 from Chandler Vanelswyk and a 77 from Kyle Clark were enough to push the Grizzlies to a 395.

That not only gave Central the D-II title but it also edged Clovis North for the second best score overall — and with it the final spot at the CIF Southern California Regional on June 2.

Twelve individuals also will qualify for the regional at next Tuesday's Central Section Individual Championships in Madera.
