One person is dead after a solo vehicle accident on Interstate 5 north of Coalinga on Saturday evening.

A San Jose woman was driving a 2000 Ford Expedition northbound on Interstate 5, just past Derrick Avenue, when she allowed the vehicle to drift to the right nearly leaving the asphalt, the California Highway Patrol said.

The woman then turned left to return to the freeway but the vehicle spun out of control and traveled across the northbound lanes before it came to rest on its side in the center median.

The woman and a male passenger in the front seat sustained minor injuries and were taken to Coalinga Regional Medical Center for treatment. A passenger in the rear of the vehicle, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. The passenger has not been identified pending notification of family.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash. The case is under investigation.
