Trail Mix for 5/8: Runner of the Year series continues Saturday

RThe Valley Runner of the Year series picks up with a 30-point race Saturday -- the annual Mother's Day Run/Walk at Woodward Park's Mountain View Shelter.

Samuel Silva of Los Angeles leads the men's open division with 139 points and Fresno's Sean Marzolf, winner of the past two 30-point races, is second with 97. Marzolf has run three fewer races than Silva this year, but the two are tied for races won at three apiece.

Maria Rivera of Visalia is on track to defend her women's open division title with a 46-point lead. Rivera has won all four races she's competed in, including three worth 30 points. Fresno's Amanda Whitten is in second with 56 points.

The Mother's Day races will start at 7:10 a.m. with the kids quarter-mile run. The 2-mile run/walk starts at 7:20 and the 10K main event at 7:30.

Registration on Saturday is available starting at 6 a.m. Race fees cost $20 for children and $30 for adults. Proceeds will benefit local youth projects and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Deadline No. 2 for Half Dome permits nearing

The deadline to follow up on preseason applications to hike Half Dome is May 20. Applicants should have received an email from as early as April 14, notifying them if the application was successful in the lottery.

If successful, applicants have until May 20 to confirm their permit online. All unconfirmed reservations will be cancelled May 21 and added to the daily lottery that starts May 23.

Black Mountain Open Preserve Day

** When: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday

** Where: Black Mountain, east of Prather

The Sierra Foothill Conservancy is hosting another open preserve day Saturday, this time at Black Mountain. The event is free and open to the public. Guests can hike a fairly easy 3 miles to the top of the ridge, enjoying views of wildflowers along the trail. No dogs allowed.

** On Saturday, The SFC is also offering a birding session from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Clark's Valley near Mariposa.

REI Garage Sale

** When: 4-9 p.m. Saturday

** Where: REI Fresno, 7810 N. Blackstone Ave.

REI will hold another members-only garage sale this weekend where adventurers can find cheap and discounted gear. The store will hand out numbered wristbands at 4 p.m. with the lottery draw entry starting at 5 p.m. Memberships can be purchased on site for $15. All sales are final.
