Man dies after plowing car into utility pole in central Fresno

A 41-year-old man was killed in a single-car crash in central Fresno early Thursday, said Fresno police Lt. Joe Gomez.

The crash was reported about 12:50 a.m. in the area of Shields and Weber avenues just east of Highway 99. The 41-year-old -- the driver and only occupant in the 2005 Honda Accord -- was going fast and hit a large utility pole on Shields, Gomez said.

Firefighters used a Jaws of Life tool to get the man out of the wrecked Honda, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Fresno County Coroner's Office identified him later Thursday as Larry Downs, 41, of Fresno.

The crash remains under investigation.
