Thumbs down to state Sens. Tom Berryhill (R-Twain Harte), Andy Vidak (R-Hanford) and Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres). They helped defeat SB 962, which would have required smartphones to include technology rendering them inoperable when not in the owner's possession. As "kill switch" bill author Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) noted, the wireless industry profits handsomely by selling new phones, as well as insurance policies, to theft victims.
Thumbs up to the United Way of Fresno County's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and MyFreeTaxes by Central California Legal Services. The two programs helped prepare 5,941 tax filings — surpassing their goal of 5,000. Nearly $6.7 million was received in tax returns by low-income families in Fresno County assisted by the VITA program alone.
Thumbs up to Make-A-Wish Central California for kicking off its airline miles drive. Nearly 70% of wishes require air travel, and more than 160 airline tickets are needed annually to help Valley children's wishes come true, says Diana Rambo, the nonprofit's executive director. To donate your miles, call (559) 221-9474 or visit www.centralca.wish.org and click on the Wishes in Flight link.
Thumbs up to the Exchange Club of Fresno for donating $1,275 to the Fresno Police Activities League in honor of Octavio Joseph Otto Tocchio, a former Fresno State criminology professor who died last year.
