Valley events planned for National Day of Prayer

Special breakfasts, luncheons, services and outdoor events at city halls again are planned in the central San Joaquin Valley for the National Day of Prayer, which is Thursday.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual event where people gather at venues across the nation to pray for America and its leadership as well as community concerns.

This year's national theme — "One Voice United in Prayer" — is based on Romans 15:6: "So that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ."

In the Valley:

--"Christian Observance of the National Day of Prayer" events are noon to 1 p.m. at Clovis City Hall, which is at 1033 Fifth St., and 6-7 p.m. at Fresno City Hall, which is at Fresno and P streets.

--An interfaith service is at 6 p.m. at California and Elm gym, 1802 E. California Ave., Fresno. (The location has changed: the service was originally scheduled at Saint Rest Baptist Church, 1550 E. Rev. Chester Riggins Ave.)

The Interfaith Alliance of Central California event begins with a procession of clergy members, faith leaders and presenters of many faiths.

--A Mayor's Prayer Breakfast is 7-8:30 a.m. at Madera District Fairgrounds' Hatfield Hall, Madera.

The keynote speaker is former Fresno Mayor Alan Autry. Cost is $15.

Also, a Senior Celebration is 2-3:30 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 2026 N. Granada Dr., Madera. Ross Thornton is the speaker.

Cost is $2. People ages 55 and older are free.

Both events are presented by the Madera Chamber of Commerce and the Madera Ministerial Association.

Madera Mayor Robert Poythress will be a special guest at both events.

--A Hanford prayer luncheon is at 11:30 a.m. at Hanford Civic Auditorium, 400 N. Douty St.

The catered luncheon, which is optional, costs $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

A prayer program, which is free, is from noon to 1 p.m. The keynote speaker is Retired Col. Jeff O'Leary, a former FOX News analyst who is the founder of Mission of Joy Orphanage.

--A Visalia Prayer Breakfast — hosted by the Visalia Rescue Mission — is 7-9 a.m. at Visalia First Assembly, 3737 S. Akers St.

The event features a catered breakfast, live worship, speaker and fellowship. Cost is $25.
