CBS47 changed its nighttime news desk Thursday, replacing Evy Ramos with Lindsey Pena as co-anchor of the 5, 6, 7 and 11 p.m. newscasts.
Matt Rosenfeld, general manager of the local CBS affiliate, said knowing Ramos was planning to leave the station in June, plus the impending start of the important May ratings period, led to the abrupt change.
May is one of the four periods during the year when viewing numbers are tracked to determine advertising rates.
Rosenfeld said Ramos resigned. "Evy told station management she was leaving in June. That her husband was pursuing work outside the market. We decided to make the change earlier," Rosenfeld said.
But Ramos said that the change has nothing to do with her husband, and she doesn't have a job in another market. She wouldn't comment any further on the matter. She wrote on Facebook: "Today is my last day at CBS47. It has been a wonderful 5 years and I have loved every minute of my time here. Thank you all for being a part of my life."
Ramos previously worked in San Diego and at Fresno's KMPH Fox 26.
Pena, who started her career at KSEE24 as a Fresno State intern, was hired in 2003. She's handled numerous jobs, including working on the assignment desk, Web producer and anchor/reporter.
CBS47 and KSEE24 moved under one roof last year, both managed by the Texas-based Nexstar Broadcasting Group.
"It's been a whirlwind. This has all happened very quickly and it was definitely unexpected. That being said, I'm very pleased and excited and grateful for this amazing opportunity," Pena said.
Days before moving Pena to the evening anchor chair, Rosenfeld had been highly touting a move that would have paired Pena and Joey Horta as the co-hosts of the station's "CBS47 Eyewitness News This Morning."
Horta debuted Thursday as a solo host while a search is conducted to find a co-host. Horta, who grew up on a farm in Atwater, came to Fresno from Harlingen, Texas. Earlier this year, he joined KSEE24 as a weekend anchor.
Rosenfeld said he has ruled out Jenny Toste as a possible co-anchor. Once Toste returns from leave, she will handle weather on the KGPE (Channel 47.1) morning show, while Robb Johnson reports on traffic conditions. Rosenfeld said Toste's weather skills are too important to consider her for the co-anchor job.
As part of the CBS47 morning change, Rosenfeld is moving longtime morning show anchor Zara Arboleda to "CBS47 Eyewitness News" investigative reporter.
"I will miss Jenny, the crew and my viewers so much. But I can't even begin to describe how excited I am to be able to take my kids to school in the morning -- and not have my alarm going off at 2:30 a.m. every day. I love the challenge of investigative reporting and can't wait to start digging for some great stories," Arboleda said.
