Trail Mix for 4/24: Eastern Sierra trout season opens Saturday

Anglers searching for trout in the eastern Sierra can cast their lines one hour before sunrise on Saturday — the state's general trout opener for freshwater streams and rivers, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced this week.

A bag limit of five trout per day is in effect for nearby lakes, rivers and streams.

Drawing for deer, pig hunts in Merced Co.

Hunters can now apply for deer and pig hunt access permits for the opening weekend on Aug. 9-10 in the Cottonwood Creek and San Luis Reservoir wildlife areas.

Call the CDFW Los Banos office at (209) 826-0463 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for an application or download the form at www.dfg.ca.gov/lands/wa/region4/cottonwoodcreek.html.

Applications may be submitted via email to roger.wilbur@wildlife.ca.gov or mailed to 18110 W. Henry Miller Ave., Los Banos, 93635.

The deadline for the drawing is July 3 and 30 permits per day will be selected in a computerized drawing at 11 a.m. July 7.

Kid's Fishing Derby at Eastman Lake

Saturday is the annual Kid's Fishing Derby at Eastman Lake. It will be held on the Chowchilla (day side) of the lake.

Bait will be provided as well as loaner rods and reels while supplies last. Baiting, casting and water safety booths will be available to all anglers age 15 and younger.

The event is sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Lunch will be at 11:30 a.m. for all registered kids and their families.

Free entrance fees at Sequoia/Kings Canyon

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks will be waving vehicle entrance fees Saturday to celebrate Junior Ranger Day. Free activities will be held all day throughout the parks for children ages 5 and up.

Shinzen Japanese Garden Run/Walk

When: 6 a.m. Saturday

Where: Woodward Park (Shinzen Garden parking lot)

The 29th annual Shinzen Run & Walk offers three courses of 2, 5 and 10 miles.

The 5-mile run highlights the day's events at 8 a.m., as it's worth a hefty 30 points in the Valley Runner of the Year series.

The 10-mile walk starts at 6 a.m. with the run at 6:45. The kids race is at 7:15 and the 2-mile walk and run at 7:30.

Register today (3-7 p.m.) and Friday (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) at Kitahara Buick GMC at 5515 N. Blackstone Ave. Costs are $10 for the kids run, $25 for the 2- and 5-mile events and $40 for the 10-mile events. Prices go up $5 on race day.

Volunteers sought to clean Spano River West

When: 8 a.m. Saturday

Where: San Joaquin River, west of Spano Park

The San Joaquin River Parkway is seeking volunteers to help clean up Spano River West, an area once extensively farmed, grazed, and mined for gravel. The site is now planned for restoration.
