Thumbs up to Isis Frausto-Vicencio, a sophomore at College of the Sequoias and a Strathmore High School graduate. She was awarded a Jack Kent Cooke scholarship for being one of the top community college students in the nation. The value of the scholarship is $30,000 annually for three years. Frausto-Vicencio is the first member of her family to graduate from high school and attend college. Her grade-point average is 3.96, and she has earned two internships at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
Thumbs up to Fresno State's Sigma Chi chapter for donating $25,000 to Children's Hospital Central California. The fraternity raised the money through its annual Derby Days event. Sigma Chi has raised a total of $100,000 for the hospital in recent years.
Thumbs up to Wells Fargo & Co. for awarding $452,231 in grants to the Fresno County Economic Opportunities Commission, Habitat for Humanity of Fresno and Boys & Girls Clubs of Fresno County. The EOC is getting $245,000 to rebuild a baseball field and the surrounding area in Del Rey. Habitat for Humanity will receive $119,731 to build a park in southwest Fresno. An award of $87,500 will enable Boys & Girls Clubs to install lighting on the recreation field at its East Fresno club.
Thumbs up to the 70-member Central High School concert band for winning four awards at the WorldStrides Heritage Performance Festival held in Seattle last weekend.
