Pets of the Week April 19: Fixed-up kitty offers cautionary tale

The Fresno BeeApril 18, 2014

CCSPCA: Blade, a black 1-year-old male domestic shorthair cat, is looking for a new home after recovering from serious injuries he sustained in a car engine.

"It's a miracle that he made it out alive," said Kim Yrigollen, rescue coordinator for the Central California Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "He suffered deep lacerations, and we had to amputate his tail."

Blade hasn't let two major surgeries and the loss of his tail affect his temperament. "He is such a great cat — still so loving," Yrigollen said. "He is one of our favorites."

Blade's wounds have healed and he shouldn't need any future procedures. This great Pet of the Week will be available for adoption at the CCSPCA Animal Center on 103 S. Hughes Ave. beginning Sunday.

The center's hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Tuesday. It is open until 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Blade's maiming may seem like a freak occurrence, but the CCSPCA says otherwise.

"Cats crawl into engines and wheel wells to get warm, even in the summer," Yrigollen said. "It gets cold late at night."

Yrigollen said she thinks Blade crawled into a vehicle's engine compartment through the bottom of the vehicle.

She recommends that anyone who parks outdoors thoroughly check their vehicle before starting the engine.

Blade is living proof that cats can fit into unexpected spaces.
