Apprentice ironworkers advance in Fresno competition (video)

Eleven competitors vied Thursday for the chance to advance at the California/Nevada/Arizona Outstanding Apprenticeship Competition at University of Iron in Fresno.

The event is held bi-annually at rotating sites. The winners go on to compete at the international event to be held in Toronto this September.

Challenges for apprentices included steel-shaping skills such as welding, burning and rigging, a written test and a climb up a 35-foot column.

The winners were: First place, Jordan Howard, Ironworkers Local 75 of Phoenix; second place, Jeremy Braun, Ironworkers Local 118 of Sacramento; and third place, Maxwell Svader, Ironworkers Local 416, Los Angeles.
