Joanne Lippert was honored Wednesday afternoon as the 2014 Fresno County Women's Chamber of Commerce Mother of the Year in a surprise ceremony.

The Fresno County Women's Chamber of Commerce has been handing out the annual honor since 1941. It's a chamber tradition to surprise the honoree. Wednesday, Lippert was lured away from her travel agency workplace to pick up a "sick" granddaughter. Upon Lippert's return to the ALTOUR office, family, friends and chamber members surprised Lippert with the announcement. A luncheon May 9 at Tornino's Banquets will celebrate Lippert.

Lippert, 78, has seven children and 21 grandchildren. In announcing her honor, the chamber quoted one of her children who nominated her, saying Joanne's love "knows no law, no pity, it dares all things, and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path. Joanne Lippert has this kind of fierce love for her children, for her friends, for her co-workers, and for her beloved Fresno community."

The chamber is taking reservations for the May 9 luncheon. For more information or to make a reservation, call (559) 226-4830 or visit fcwcc.org/.
