Deadly NorCal crash: One bus on way to Humboldt was from Fresno

April 13, 2014

Two Humboldt State University officials confirmed Sunday that Fresno-area students were on a bus that was heading with two other buses to the Northern California campus before a FedEx tractor-trailer crossed the Interstate 5 median and hit a bus carrying students and chaperones from the Los Angeles area, resulting in a fiery crash.

One bus made at least seven stops to pick up students in the Fresno area and the Bay Area, said Frank Whitlatch, associate vice president for advancement.

Whitlach said he was trying to obtain a list of high schools the students attended.

There were around 45 students on the Fresno/Bay Area bus, Humboldt State spokesman Simon Chabel said. He did not have any further information on the bus.

The other two buses were from Los Angeles. The Fresno bus and the second Los Angeles bus were traveling well ahead of the bus involved in the crash.
