A small plane crashed Friday near an airport west of Mariposa, killing the pilot.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the single-engine amateur-built Bowers Fly Baby 1A plane crashed shortly after 10 a.m.

Gregor said the plane went down about three miles north of the Mariposa-Yosemite Airport. It took searchers nearly two hours to find the wreckage in a rugged area off Highway 49.

Gregor said the pilot was the lone passenger inside the plane. The name of the pilot has not been released.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will both investigate the cause of the crash.
