Fresno strip mall fire spreads through shared attic

The Fresno BeeApril 11, 2014

A fire at a Fresno strip mall early Friday was labor-intensive for firefighters, who had to crawl through a common attic where the blaze ignited.

Cpt. Brad Driscoll with the Fresno Fire Department said the two-alarm fire at 3769 West Shaw, near the intersection of Brawley Avenue, was reported around 2 a.m. Fire spread through the shared attic. The most significant damage happened at a Johnny Quick store. Other businesses, including a Chevron gas station and a check-cashing business, had less significant damage.

About 45 firefighters in 13 fire engines, trucks and a breathing support unit remained on scene until about 5:30 a.m. to make sure the fire was extinguished, Driscoll said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and total damage has not yet been estimated.
