The U.S. Senate's Foreign Relations Committee adopted a resolution Thursday that supports the observation and remembrance of the Armenian genocide of the early 1900s.

According to the Armenian Assembly of America, Senate Resolution 410 was approved by the committee after being introduced by committee chairman Robert Menendez, D-N.J.

His resolution notes the deportation of nearly 2 million Armenians from their homeland and the subsequent killing of 1.5 million of those people.

Under the resolution, the genocide will be officially observed on April 24.
