Heat coming to Valley; 90 degrees predicted for Tuesday

Temperatures will begin rising sharply today, and possibly by 20 degrees on Tuesday when the predicted high for Fresno is 90 degrees, according to National Weather Service forecasters in Hanford.

Saturday's high was 68 degrees, and the warmup is expected to begin today before peaking Tuesday, said Gary Sanger, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Hanford.

"High pressure will be sitting over us Tuesday and Wednesday before a weak low comes into California at the end of the week," he said.

Today's high will be about 80 degrees, Sanger said, before rising to 88 Monday and climbing to 90 on Tuesday.

While 90 is unusually warm for early April, temperatures on Tuesday will likely not reach a record. The all-time mark for April 8 in Fresno is 95 degrees, set in 1989, he said.

The best chance of a new record is the overnight temperature Wednesday. The low temperature is forecast at 63 degrees. The existing record for the warmest overnight low for that date is 58 degrees, set in 1989, Sanger said.

Heat will remain Wednesday with the high temperature reaching 87, before the high falls back to the low 80s on Thursday and Friday, he said.

This time of year, the average high temperature is in the low 70s in Fresno.

The only chance of rain will be in the mountains late in the week, Sanger said. The patterns show a slight chance of rain in the Oakhurst area, about 20% during the day Friday, he said.
