The Fresno County Coroner's office said an elderly woman who was rescued from a fire in her Sanger apartment Sunday died from injuries related to the fire.

Agnes Mercer, 91, died Sunday after being taken to the emergency department at Community Regional Medical Center, the coroner's office said.

Sanger Fire Chief Greg Tarascou said the woman was rescued from her apartment at Fifth Street and Bethel Avenue about 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

The fire in the Elderberry Apartment complex appeared to have started in the kitchen, Tarascou said Sunday. Flames were contained to the woman's apartment, he said. The apartment complex is home to mostly senior citizens.
