An early-morning fire at a central Fresno apartment building displaced 21 people and caused about $80,000 in damage Thursday.

Koby Johns, Fresno Department spokesman, said the blaze started in a downstairs apartment of a four-unit complex at Calaveras and McKenzie avenues. When fire crews arrived shortly after 7 a.m., they could see flames coming from the apartment.

Although firefighters were told there may be someone trapped in an upstairs unit, they determined everyone had evacuated the building.

Johns said the fire was mostly limited to the downstairs unit and there was considerable smoke damage to the unit directly above. The two adjacent apartments had minor damage.

The 21 residents -- including 9 children -- were provided temporary housing assistance by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Johns said.
