An unusual exhibit of oil paintings of all of the first ladies, from Martha Washington to Michelle Obama, will have an opening reception on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fresno City Hall. The event is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Fresno and the Fresno County Office of Education. A short program will begin at 6 p.m. and refreshments will be served.
The paintings were donated to FCOE by the late Joe Levy, chairman of Gottschalks, the former Fresno-based department store chain. He purchased the set from California portrait artist Lawrence Williams, who died in 2003. Williams painted the portraits from official White House photographs. The portrait of Michelle Obama was painted by Fresno artist Ma Ly. The portraits will remain on exhibit at City Hall through the month of April.
The public is invited to the reception. There will be relaxed parking at City Hall beginning at 4 p.m. The program is offered in conjunction with ArtHop.
