Sanger firefighters rescued an elderly woman from a fire in her apartment at Fifth Street and Bethel Avenue about about 10:15 a.m. Sunday morning.

The woman was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and was in critical condition, said Sanger Fire Chief Greg Tarascou.

The fire at the Elderberry Apartment complex was contained to the woman's apartment, Tarascou said. The apartment complex has mostly senior citizens as residents, he said.

The fire appears to have started in the kitchen, but the investigation is ongoing as to the cause, the fire chief said.
