Two toddlers nearly drowned Saturday afternoon in an apartment complex pond in northeast Fresno, police said.

Officers went to the Maplewood Apartments at 4885 N. Backer Ave. and found a boy and girl, age 1, in and out of consciousness and struggling to breathe.

Emergency Medical Services and Fresno Fire Department arrived and helped treat the children, who were taken to St Agnes Medical Center for treatment. Currently, the children are still at Saint Agnes and were in stable condition, police said

Officers learned the two children were playing with older children on a rear patio surrounded by a 3-foot fence with a gate. The toddlers went through the gate and to a large fish pond about 30 yards away, entered the pond and could not get out. The older children alerted adults, once of whom started rescue breathing on the children until emergency workers arrived.
