Two weeks ago, runners zipped through the streets of downtown Fresno and the Chaffee Zoo for the California Classic half marathon.
Sunday they'll gather for a shorter, more city-inspired race: The Fresno Urban Run 5K.
The race starts 8 a.m. Sunday at Chukchansi Park with participants snaking the stadium's two-decks of stairs. Next, they'll run up and down the spiral, six-story parking garage on the corner of Inyo and Van Ness along with a one-mile stretch through Fulton Mall with one challenge left before the finish line: a 220-stair climb spanning 10 stories to the top of the Grand Tower building.
That's all in the Grand Slam Run.
Organizers offer a shorter version -- the Grand Tower Run -- and it's everything mentioned minus the 900-plus stadium steps.
Limited spots are left in the run and race-day registration is not guaranteed if the event sells out by today. Cost is $40 per participant.
Packet pickup is Friday from 1-6 p.m. at Sierra Running Company or at 7 a.m. race day.
Ultramarathon on the San Joaquin River Trail
Just three weeks after pulling off a half-marathon at the San Joaquin River Gorge, organizer Nathaniel Moore is going even bigger for the next single-track race on the San Joaquin River Trail.
Moore, 30, is organizing the San Joaquin River Trail 50-50 -- a 50K (31-mile) or 50-mile run.
The race is tentatively set for Nov. 15.
One thing is for certain -- Moore won't go easy on runners for the 50-50.
The SJRT half had a cumulative elevation gain of 2,500 feet. We can only imagine what's in store for the full 50 miles.
